Uncertainty vs Certainty: Enjoy the ride
Driving my motorcycle in Bali, I watch the line in the middle of the road. Traffic moving in different directions. The line gives me a level of certainty. If I stay to the left, I likely won’t collide unexpectedly.
But here, that line holds a different certainty than it did for me in Maui. There, if you cross the line, you get a look, a reaction, maybe road rage. “What are you doing bro”?
Here, it’s just part of the daily movement. Scooters, trucks, cars flowing around each other. Banana trees used as pothole markers. The line is less law, more guideline.
It makes me wonder about certainty in my own life. Where do I actually find it?
When the rules fail, what can i rely on?
My eyes. My reflexes. My poise. My balance. My presence.
Yet, even those can fail. Vision blurs. Timing slips. Attention drops.
Certainty gives direction. A place to begin. A vector to build from.
Uncertainty keeps me awake. Sensing. Adjusting.
Anticipating. When a dog runs into the road. When traffic suddenly stops. When rain hits hard. Uncertainty can feel like fear ..or like adventure.
Together, certainty and uncertainty feel like a good game, a good sport, a real ride. I wouldn’t want to play a sport that has a certain win.
I have fun when I stay in my senses. In my skills. In my intuition. Engaged with what is actually happening. Ready to change. Ready for challenge. Open to any outcome, yet fully here and giving my all.
Certainty and uncertainty, together on the road of life, that’s where the aliveness is.
Enjoy the ride.
